ABOUT IPR

In July 1980, the University of Southern California established the Institute for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Research (IPR), dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary research and education to improve the health and well-being of individuals and whole communities at the local and global levels.

In the ensuing 25 years, IPR has grown from three persons to several hundred faculty and research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and students from the bachelor’s to the post-doctoral levels.  It collaborates with 11 schools at USC and universities, research institutes, and public health agencies on 5 continents.

A review of IPR carried out by an esteemed panel of experts in 2001 referred to IPR as “a paradigm of community research and outreach, conducting school-based smoking prevention research programs, supporting an Hispanic tobacco control network and implementing interventions to enhance quality of life among low income multi-ethnic populations, among other activities.”
